My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I love love love these characters, Timothy Wilde and his wilder brother, Valentine - both a captain of the new New York police force and a fireman, city heroes who try to save the victims of the ramshackle buildings in the 19th century city. I discovered that Lyndsay Faye could write an impeccable 19th C ENGLISH novel (Jane Steele) and determined to read everything. I am not disappointed. A mystery, a fascinating look at the early corrupt and burgeoning New York, characters of such depth that they could break your heart - but frequently leave you laughing.
Be glad you didn't live in the New York of the 1840s - but if you had, the pragmatic morality and great hearts of the Wilde brothers would give you hope for the future
